Decade-Old Bitcoin Wallets Stir Up Market Fears
A cluster of decade-old Bitcoin wallets has come back to life, moving over $40 million in combined transactions between August 16 and 26.
The six wallets, which had not moved any coins since 2011 or 2014 when Bitcoin's price was significantly lower than its current value, sent a total of 553.59 BTC to various addresses.
However, it's unclear whether these transactions represent actual selling pressure, as five of the six wallets avoided known exchanges and transferred their coins to unidentified addresses.
The Galaxy Research data shows that dormant Bitcoin movement fell during the second quarter to its lowest level since Q3 2022. In fact, 2026 is on pace to record less than half the dormant coin movement seen in 2025.
Experts suggest that security concerns may be a driving factor behind these transactions. The recent disclosure of a flaw affecting certain Coldcard hardware wallets has prompted long-term holders to reorganize their Bitcoin.
