Decentralization Spectrum: ARK-Glassnode Report Quantifies Tradeoffs for BTC, ETH, SOL
A new report from ARK Invest and Glassnode examines the decentralization of Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL) across four key design features: auditability, security, governance, and ownership. The report, released on September 1, 2026, quantifies these tradeoffs using six measurable dimensions.
Bitcoin stands out for its emphasis on monetary credibility and conservative governance, making it ideal for long-term value storage. Ethereum balances decentralization with programmability, leveraging its proof-of-stake model to coordinate upgrades and scalability. Solana prioritizes high performance over decentralization, focusing on throughput and coordination speed.
The report reveals stark contrasts in block production dynamics between the three networks. For Bitcoin, a miner holding 1% of the network can exit their position in as little as 30 seconds by powering down hardware. In contrast, unstaking the equivalent capital in Ethereum's proof-of-stake system can take several weeks under stress conditions.
