Decentralized Finance Faces Reality Check
The promise of decentralized finance (DeFi) is that no single authority controls your money. But recent incidents are forcing users to confront a more complicated reality where control points persist beneath the surface of permissionless code.
One such example came when the U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned Tornado Cash, alleging it facilitated over $455 million in transactions tied to the North Korea-linked Lazarus Group. Exchanges, wallet providers, and stablecoin issuers quickly blocked or froze addresses connected to Tornado Cash.
This episode demonstrated that while code may be immutable, access to it is not. Government directives can ripple through centralized service providers and effectively cut off users from decentralized protocols.
