DeepMind Dismantles AlphaFold Team Amid Shift to Large Language Models

Google's DeepMind has disbanded its AlphaFold team, which was behind one of the most significant AI breakthroughs in scientific history. The move marks the end of a dedicated unit that mapped protein structures for hundreds of millions of biological compounds and earned a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024.

The team's leader, John Jumper, along with researchers Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel, has left DeepMind to join Anthropic, an AI safety company founded by former OpenAI executives. Roughly 25% of the original authors on AlphaFold's foundational research papers have departed DeepMind entirely.

The remaining researchers at DeepMind have been reassigned to other projects, including enzyme design, nuclear fusion research, genomics, and Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's drug discovery subsidiary. DeepMind is shifting its focus towards Gemini, a large language model family that the company wants to position as a general-purpose engine for scientific discovery.

The talent migration from DeepMind to Anthropic has significant implications for the crypto market. Anthropic's Claude models are widely used in DeFi analytics, smart contract auditing, and trading bot development. The disbandment of the AlphaFold team also raises questions about the long-term development trajectory of the database they created.
