DeFi Could Capture Trillions in Global Financial Market Opportunity
Decentralized finance (DeFi) could have a much larger opportunity than investors are currently estimating, according to Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan. Hougan argues that instead of measuring DeFi against the size of the cryptocurrency market, it's more relevant to consider its potential share of the global financial system, which he estimates at around $500 trillion.
This perspective shifts the focus from valuing DeFi protocols based on their current user base and transaction volume to assessing their potential to capture a significant portion of the fees generated by traditional financial markets. Hougan points out that if blockchain-based applications can provide similar services with different cost structures, they could potentially capture even a small fraction of the $500 trillion global financial market.
Hougan's argument is supported by the fact that DeFi has already demonstrated its ability to support financial services without relying entirely on centralized intermediaries. Decentralized exchanges, lending protocols, and stablecoins are examples of blockchain-based applications that could potentially compete with traditional finance.
