DeFi Protocols Flood Token Holders with Buyback Bonuses
DeFi protocols are increasingly distributing revenue to token holders through buybacks and other mechanisms, signaling maturation in the sector. According to DeFiLlama's Holders Revenue dashboard, over 231 protocols and chains now actively distribute revenue to holders, up from just 10 in 2021.
The top 12 protocols alone spent nearly $800 million on buybacks and revenue-sharing mechanisms in July this year, a 400%-plus increase since early 2024. Hyperliquid is a notable example, routing 99% of its trading fees into HYPE buybacks, with cumulative repurchases exceeding $2 billion.
Other protocols like Jupiter, Uniswap, and PancakeSwap are also implementing revenue-sharing programs, with some channelsing significant amounts into token buybacks. However, analysts at Keyrock warn that many existing programs are mismanaged, with protocols often overspending during market peaks when buybacks are least efficient.
