DeFiLlama Drains Wallet to Prove Fake App on Apple Store
DeFiLlama, a popular analytics platform in decentralized finance, took an unconventional approach to dealing with a fake app on Apple's App Store. The platform had been trying to get the scam app removed for months, but Apple only responded after DeFiLlama deliberately drained a wallet connected to the app and presented the evidence.
The ordeal began when DeFiLlama founder 0xngmi reported the fake app multiple times for trademark infringement. However, Apple took no action until DeFiLlama conducted a sting operation of sorts by loading funds into a wallet and connecting it to the scam app. Once the funds were stolen, they provided the evidence to Apple, which promptly removed the app.
DeFiLlama had been hesitant to release its own official mobile app due to the presence of the fake one on the App Store. The team chose not to launch its app while the impersonator was still live, fearing it would only confuse users.
The incident highlights concerns about Apple's review process and how it protects users from malicious software. DeFiLlama emphasized the importance of verifying an app's developer before connecting a wallet.
