DeFi's Quiet Crisis: Borrower Shortage Crimps Yields
The decentralized finance (DeFi) industry is facing a 'quiet crisis' due to a shortage of borrowers, according to Matthew Fisher, CEO of Katana. This has led to compressed lending yields across major DeFi protocols and made traditional fixed-income products more attractive.
Fisher argued that the industry's multi-chain expansion strategy created more problems than it solved by fracturing liquidity across isolated ecosystems. He believes that decentralized finance will shift towards hyper-specialized chains that own their own lending, trading, and derivatives infrastructure.
The trend is already visible with Katana's recent acquisition of a veteran perpetual futures infrastructure team. This move reflects the broader industry consolidation trend where protocols are building vertically integrated ecosystems with core financial primitives owned by the chain itself.
