Democrats Block Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Concerns Over Trump's Family Profits

Senate Democrats blocked legislation aimed at creating a new regulatory framework for cryptocurrency, effectively stalling industry-backed efforts to establish uniform rules. The bill, which was backed by major crypto companies and would have provided legal certainty for the industry, needed 60 votes to move forward but fell short with a 49-50 vote.

The opposition was led by Democrats who insisted on stronger ethics safeguards to prevent President Donald Trump and his family from profiting from cryptocurrency investments while in office. Trump agreed to some concessions, including new restrictions on federal elected officials issuing digital assets and additional powers for state attorneys general to enforce crypto measures. However, these concessions were not enough to win over the Democrats.

Trump's family has amassed significant wealth in the crypto sector since his reelection, including a controlling stake in World Liberty Financial, a crypto firm co-founded with Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff. The president reported more than $500 million in revenue from World Liberty Financial sales of crypto products last year.

The legislation aimed to give the industry more legal certainty and protect consumers by creating a broad set of guardrails and regulatory requirements. However, opponents argued that the bill was a giveaway to the industry, which has become a significant donor to candidates in both parties around the country.
