Democrats Block Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Trump Family's $1.4B Crypto Windfall

Share

Congressional Democrats are trying to derail legislation that would create a new regulatory landscape for the digital currency industry. The Senate is scheduled to take a procedural vote on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which would set new rules to govern the growing crypto sector. However, Democrats are using the recent surge in crypto wealth accumulated by U.S. President Donald Trump as a rallying cry against the bill.

Republican Party leaders in Congress incorporated ethics provisions into the bill that would prevent any U.S. president or other government officials from issuing digital assets. But Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, dismissed this move as a 'charade' and called for a no vote on the measure.

The Democrats are also citing Trump's alleged enrichment through his crypto ventures, which they claim raises concerns about corruption and conflicts of interest. Scott Greytek, deputy executive director of Transparency International's U.S. office, testified that Trump made over $1.4 billion tied to his crypto ventures last year, including $800 million from a stake in World Liberty Financial and another $635 million from Trump-branded meme coins.

Republicans argue that the bill addresses threats to both the finance sector and national security, but Democrats are not convinced. Influential Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren dismissed the Clarity Act as a 'weak fig leaf' that will do nothing to stop Trump's alleged crypto profits. The House of Representatives passed the bill in July 2025 with 78 Democrats voting in favor.
