Democrats Sound Alarm on AI Dangers Ahead of Potential Existential Risks
A former researcher at AI company Anthropic has sounded an alarm about the potential dangers of advanced artificial intelligence, and congressional Democrats are taking notice. Jacob Coxon's public resignation letter on September 8 claimed that both Anthropic and OpenAI believe AI could pose existential risks by as early as 2030.
Within a day, House Democrats seized on the warning, with Representatives Lori Trahan, Ted Lieu, and Greg Casar each calling for legislative action to rein in AI development. They argue that the technology is moving too fast and may soon outrun human control.
The proposed bills include the AI Kill Switch Act, which would require emergency shutdown capabilities in advanced AI systems, and the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, which would prohibit the development of superintelligent AI altogether.
Rep. Trahan has taken a more nuanced position, favoring a national oversight framework for high-risk AI models. Her approach is embodied in the bipartisan Obernolte-Trahan bill, which would establish federal standards for evaluating and monitoring advanced AI systems.
