Detroit 'Big Three' Automakers Join Fintech and Crypto Firms in Banking Charter Push
The Detroit 'Big Three' automakers have received preliminary approval from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) for industrial bank charters, joining fintech and crypto firms seeking deeper access to the US banking system.
Ford Motor, General Motors, and Stellantis are among those who have been granted preliminary deposit-insurance approval for industrial banks. This would allow them to fund auto loans and financial products directly through their own banking entities.
The approvals come as part of a surge in applications for new bank charters under the Trump administration. The FDIC has been encouraging increased competition in banking, with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) granting conditional national trust bank charters to crypto ventures like Ripple Labs and Fidelity Digital Assets.
Affirm, Upstart, and Enova are also seeking or expanding banking-related licenses. Automakers see industrial bank charters as a way to gain more direct control over funding and management of loans, potentially lowering their cost of capital and expanding financial products they can offer customers.
