DEX Volume Surpasses 24% of CEX Activity
The decentralized exchange (DEX) sector has reached a significant milestone in July 2026, accounting for 24.14% of all spot trading volume handled by centralized exchanges (CEX). This marks the highest level since tracking began in 2019 and signifies a growing trend where DEXs are increasingly becoming the preferred platform for traders.
The absolute spot volume on decentralized platforms fell approximately 26% month-over-month to around $130.77 billion, marking its lowest point in nearly two years. However, despite this decline, DEXs managed to capture an even larger share of the market, underscoring their growing influence.
The leading DEX protocols driving this volume include Uniswap, PancakeSwap, Aerodrome, and newer entrants like Hyperliquid. Notably, three ecosystems, Solana, Base, and BNB Chain, are doing the heavy lifting here, offering permissionless DEX features that centralized exchanges cannot replicate without fundamentally changing their business model.
The biggest advantage of DEXs is speed to market. When a new token launches, it can be trading on a DEX within minutes, whereas the listing process for CEX involves compliance reviews and due diligence that can take weeks or even months.
