Digital Euro Limits Balance Caps in Payment-First Approach
The European Central Bank's digital euro will not be an unlimited account. A draft provides for a cap on the balance, ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand euros per person.
This means the digital euro will primarily be used as a payment method, competing with cards and wallet apps rather than cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.
The exact figure of the holding limit is still unknown. The European Parliament cleared its negotiating mandate in July 2026, but the final text has yet to be agreed upon in the trilogue between Parliament, Council, and Commission.
