Digital Ruble Adoption Fails to Generate Significant Interest Among Russians
The digital ruble's adoption in Russia has been met with lukewarm interest from citizens and businesses, according to Taras Skvortsov, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board and CFO of Sberbank. In a recent statement, Skvortsov noted that real demand for the digital ruble is primarily coming from the Central Bank of Russia.
The digital ruble is a new form of national currency that exists only in electronic form and is not stored in commercial bank accounts but within the framework of the Central Bank. It differs from cryptocurrencies as it is issued by a state regulator and remains a ruble, not a separate token with a market rate.
Sberbank sees no mass demand for the digital ruble, with Skvortsov stating that the market does not demonstrate the interest needed to drive widespread use of the Central Bank's digital currency. The lack of activity from private clients, companies, and financial organizations has led Skvortsov to believe that the digital ruble is unlikely to take a significant share in transactions in the near future.
The implementation of the digital ruble is taking place in stages, with access provided by twelve systemically important banks. The digital ruble wallet will be placed within the banking mobile application, making it easier for users to manage their new form of currency.
