Dogecoin Blazes Trail as Coinbase Faces Revenue Test Amid Regulatory Hopes

Coinbase's trading revenue faces a test as Dogecoin surges 31% in a week, outpacing Bitcoin's 24.9% gain over the same period. The meme coin jumped following a White House crypto meeting that revived expectations for more transparent U.S. market regulations.

President Donald Trump met with cryptocurrency leaders on August 19 and called on Congress to approve a Clarity Act proposal that allocates oversight of digital assets to federal regulators. Among those present was Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong.

Coinbase finished the session at $186.49, rising 8.2%, before climbing to $189.15 in after-hours trading. The platform's reliance on Bitcoin spot fees has diminished, but a surge in altcoin trading volumes can still drive up transaction income.

The difference is notable following a weak second quarter. Coinbase saw transaction revenue drop 21% to $599 million from the prior quarter. Overall revenue declined 14% to roughly $1.2 billion, while adjusted EBITDA stayed positive at $208 million.
