DOJ Takes Down $4M Crypto Money Laundering Scheme Linked to Mexican Cartel
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has brought down a key intermediary in a $4 million crypto money laundering scheme linked to the Mexican cartel.
Carlos Érick Vázquez González, a Mexican national, pleaded guilty to money laundering crimes after being extradited from Mexico in October.
The investigation revealed that Vázquez González was responsible for depositing funds from unidentified money brokers into a cryptocurrency wallet under his custody.
Vázquez González then laundered the money by exchanging crypto assets for dollars in Mexico and returning them to the same money brokers on the other side of the border.
