Dollar Dominance Sparks Debate Over Bitcoin's Reserve Potential
A recent video of US Vice President JD Vance has sparked debate over whether the dollar's dominance as the world's reserve currency benefits or harms the US economy.
Vance argued that global demand for dollars brings advantages such as cheaper imports and easier government borrowing, but can also strengthen the currency, making US exports less competitive. This is known as the Triffin dilemma, a concept that dates back to the Bretton Woods era when the US had to supply enough dollars for global trade while maintaining convertibility into gold.
The modern system still faces this conflict: foreign investors hold enormous amounts of US assets, while Washington tries to strengthen domestic manufacturing and exports. Stablecoins could reinforce dollar dominance rather than replace it, as seen in the GENIUS Act that ties regulated payment stablecoins to liquid dollar assets, including US Treasuries.
Bitcoin represents a different model because its supply is not tied to any government's debt or fiscal policy. The US has taken a limited step towards using Bitcoin as a reserve asset through its Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, created in March 2025 using BTC obtained through government forfeitures.
