Dolly Parton's Passing Exploited by Memecoin Creators
Country music legend Dolly Parton's passing has been exploited by creators who launched memecoins using her name and likeness. Within minutes of her nephew announcing her death on Tuesday afternoon, a dozen trading pairs featuring unauthorized Solana memecoins were trading on crypto markets.
According to Protos' research, crypto influencers have a concerning history of turning real-world deaths into trading opportunities. This includes the creation of memecoins after the passing of notable figures such as Hulk Hogan and Ozzy Osbourne.
The majority of these memecoins were minted on Pump Fun, a Solana-based launchpad that allows anyone to create a tradable token for under $100 in minutes. Despite combined trading volume of millions of dollars, most of these assets crashed within hours of their creation, with market capitalizations dropping to just a few thousand dollars.
None of the memecoins have any utility or connection to Parton or her charitable causes, existing solely as long as holders can sell them to others. Protos notes that Parton's only sanctioned blockchain venture was 'Dollyverse,' a 2022 SXSW Web3 experience and NFT drop built with Fox Entertainment's Blockchain Creative Labs on Eluvio.
