Dormant Bitcoin Wallet Wakes Up After 14 Years, Moves Millions
A dormant Bitcoin wallet that had not made any transactions in over 14 years has suddenly reactivated, moving millions of dollars' worth of BTC. The wallet, which held 49.97 BTC received on July 16, 2011, when the price of BTC was under $15, now holds a value of around $3.2 million.
This represents a staggering gain of 634,347% over its original cost basis of roughly $10 per coin. The wallet's reactivation has raised questions about whether the old coins are being repositioned towards a trading venue or if it is simply a matter of consolidating them for security or custody.
The movement is not an isolated incident, as there have been several instances in the past where dormant Bitcoin wallets have woken up and moved large sums of BTC. In most cases, the destination pointed to professional infrastructure rather than a private holder suddenly cashing out.
