Dormant Bitcoin Wallets Stir Back to Life, Transferring $40 Million
At least six dormant Bitcoin wallets from 2011-2014 have come back to life, transferring around $40 million in combined value. According to Galaxy Research data, these old addresses moved a total of 553.59 BTC between August 16 and 26.
The transfers sparked speculation that early adopters were cashing out on astronomical gains from Bitcoin's early days when it traded for only a few dollars. However, the destination patterns suggest otherwise. Five of the six wallets sent their Bitcoin to addresses with no known links to cryptocurrency exchanges.
This is not an isolated incident. Onchain transfers of dormant coins have slowed down significantly in 2026, falling to their lowest level since Q3 2022. Alex Thorn from Galaxy Digital notes that this follows two unusually active years in 2024 and 2025, which they characterized as a 'great distribution.'
It's essential to remember that movement on the blockchain does not necessarily equal selling. The public ledger reveals coins departing one address and arriving at another but cannot distinguish between sales, wallet migrations, transfers to custodians, or reorganizations of holdings.
