Dormant Bitcoin Wallets Stir Up $40 Million

Dormant Bitcoin wallets from 2011-2014 have stirred up $40 million in cryptocurrency between August 16 and 26, 2026. These wallets were last active during this time period. One of these wallets has been inactive for an impressive 15 years. While such activity can raise suspicions that early Bitcoin holders are cashing out, the overall movement of dormant Bitcoin has actually decreased in 2026 compared to previous years.

This does not necessarily mean selling; coins may be transferred between wallets or custodians as part of normal business operations. Some of these involved wallets have connections to a New York lawsuit claiming Bitcoin in dormant addresses as lost property. Meanwhile, regulatory concerns continue to limit crypto adoption among middle market companies.
