Dormant Bitcoin Wallets Stirring Again, Sparking Supply Movement Questions
A long-dormant Bitcoin wallet has reactivated after 12 years of inactivity. The wallet, which first received coins on January 31, 2014, moved its balance to a new address on August 10, 2026. This transfer could potentially realize a gain of around $1.73 million, representing a 7,975% return on the average cost per coin.
This is not an isolated incident; several dormant Bitcoin wallets have been reactivated in recent years. In fact, another dormant wallet woke up just last week after 14 years of inactivity, moving its funds to a FalconX-labeled account.
Galaxy Research tracked the move and noted that old coins have been stirring more frequently over the past two years. This includes a cluster of wallets dormant since 2013 that moved $2 billion in Bitcoin in January 2024, as well as another whale that relocated 3,000 BTC worth over $349 million after a decade of silence.
