Dow Surges on Treasury Bond Buybacks and Clarity Act
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose over 500 points on Thursday, marking a roughly 1% gain. This increase comes after the index had been volatile due to bond yields.
The surge can be attributed to two catalysts: the US Treasury's decision to double its long-term bond buyback operations to at least $4B and President Trump's proposed Clarity Act, which aims to establish a legislative framework for cryptocurrencies.
Bond yields had been climbing in prior sessions, creating headwinds for growth stocks and rate-sensitive sectors. The expanded buyback program targeted this issue by committing to purchase at least $4B in long-dated bonds, effectively putting a ceiling on how far yields could rise in the near term.
The Treasury's move had an immediate impact, with Bitcoin rallying approximately 20% over the week leading into Thursday's session. The cryptocurrency peaked near $79,500 before settling around $77,000, making it its strongest weekly performance in roughly two to three years.
