Draper Sells Tanzania Island for $7.9 Million After Two Decades of Ownership
Tim Draper, a venture capital billionaire and investor in companies like Tesla and SpaceX, is selling his private island in Tanzania. The island, called Lupita Island, has been owned by Draper for two decades and has been available to rent during that time. Draper posted on the platform X (formerly Twitter) that he's asking $7.9 million for the 110-acre island and would consider 'best offer.'
Draper told Forbes that he doesn't use the island enough, which is why he's selling it. He noted that since posting about the sale, he's received several offers and expects the property to be sold quickly.
The island on Lake Tanganyika features 10 cottages, a spa, gym, game room, multiple bars, and pool, as well as activities like cruising on a 46-foot boat, swimming at a private beach, kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, or traveling to mainland Tanzania for a safari. Visitors can fly to one of Tanzania's major airports before taking another flight to the island.
Draper made his fortune in part by investing in cryptocurrencies and buying 29,656 bitcoins confiscated from the Silk Road black market in 2014 for $18.7 million, or $632 per coin. Today, bitcoin trades at over $77,000 per coin, which means it would take just 101.4 coins to buy Lupita Island.
