Durant's Forgotten Fortune
NBA star Kevin Durant and his business partner Rich Kleiman have been stuck with a surprising investment for nearly nine years. In 2016, they bought Bitcoin through Coinbase after a dinner conversation at a birthday party hosted by venture capitalist Ben Horowitz.
The exact amount of Bitcoin they purchased is unknown, but it was reportedly done at a time when the cryptocurrency was trading between $400 to $1,000. Durant had just signed a $54.3 million contract with the Golden State Warriors and was building his business interests outside basketball.
The pair lost access to their Coinbase account due to a forgotten password, which they struggled to recover for years. However, being locked out proved to be an unexpected blessing as Bitcoin soared in value during that time.
Coinbase's support team eventually helped Durant regain access to his account in September 2025, just as the cryptocurrency was reaching new heights. At the time, Bitcoin was trading around $115,000 to $117,000, up from roughly $600 when they first made their investment.
Kleiman joked about the situation during a CNBC event in September 2025, saying that 'Bitcoin keeps going up … so, I mean, it's only benefited us.' The potential value of their investment is estimated to be around $18 million, although the exact amount invested remains unknown.
