Dusting Attack on Kraken Triggers Temporary Account Freezes
Twelve thousand small-value deposits, known as a dusting attack, were received by Kraken from a wallet linked to HTX, formerly Huobi. The incident prompted the exchange to temporarily freeze some user accounts for compliance review procedures.
The goal of a dusting attack is often to break anonymity or trigger compliance alerts, and the sheer volume of deposits suggests a coordinated effort. In this case, the exchanges' automated systems flagged unusual transaction patterns, leading to the temporary freezes.
HTX has denied direct involvement in the transfers and launched an investigation into whether the wallet address was misidentified or if a third party acted maliciously. The incident highlights the challenge of attribution in cryptocurrency transactions.
