Dutch Gold Relocation Exposes Traditional Finance's Limitations
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse highlighted the Dutch central bank's $11 billion gold relocation as an ideal use case for cryptocurrency. The operation, which involved shifting 86 metric tons of gold from New York to London, took months to complete and used physical transfers and market transactions.
According to Garlinghouse, the process exposed the limitations of traditional financial infrastructure. He contrasted it with the speed and efficiency of cryptocurrency, noting that in the past decade, crypto has grown from a small experiment into a multitrillion-dollar asset class supported by financial infrastructure and market liquidity.
The Dutch central bank's operation involved selling 59 metric tons of gold held in New York and purchasing an equivalent amount in London. The remaining gold was physically transported from Zeist to London, avoiding the need for remelting North American bars.
