ECB Ensures Digital Euro Online Transactions Remain Under Commercial Banking Surveillance
The European Central Bank (ECB) has clarified its stance on the digital euro's privacy features, stating that offline transactions will offer cash-like anonymity. However, online transactions will remain under strict commercial banking surveillance.
According to Piero Cipollone, a member of the ECB's Executive Board, commercial banks will maintain direct monitoring over all online transactions in order to comply with anti-money laundering regulations.
The digital euro's framework has been criticized for its centralized control and financial oversight, which contrasts sharply with decentralized networks like Bitcoin. Unlike cryptocurrencies, which aim to empower individuals through financial sovereignty and decentralization, the digital euro perpetuates traditional banking monopoly and subordinates individual privacy rights to government oversight.
