ECB Puts Money on the Blockchain

Share

Isabel Schnabel, European Central Bank Executive Board member, has sparked interest in the crypto community by stating that central bank money 'must go onchain.'

Schnabel emphasized that stablecoins lack the capacity to expand liquidity rapidly during periods of financial stress, a gap only a central bank can fill.

The ECB is working on Project Pontes, which will synchronize TARGET Services with DLT platforms run by market participants. This project aims to support settlement finality directly on a Eurosystem-operated DLT platform, complete with smart-contract functionality and 24/7 operation.

Project Appia targets a full tokenized-market blueprint for Europe by 2028, but Schnabel's statement suggests that the ECB is focusing on bringing its reserves onchain sooner rather than later.
