The Economist magazine published an article in 1988 titled 'Get Ready for the Phoenix,' which envisioned a unified global currency called the 'Phoenix' emerging by around 2018. According to Apex Crypto Insights, the publication predicted that growing economic integration and technological progress would make national currencies less practical for international commerce, paving the way for a single currency to replace them.

The article proposed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as a possible governing authority for the Phoenix, citing its existing responsibilities in international monetary cooperation. The IMF's experience with Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), an example of an international reserve asset built from a basket of currencies, was highlighted as evidence of its potential to develop and manage a global currency.

The proposed system would reduce the ability of individual governments to influence their domestic economies through independent monetary policy by standardizing inflation management under a single authority. The article pointed to the IMF's existing oversight of exchange rate policies and its analysis of global economic developments as factors that could support such a transition.
