Edwards: Clear Roadmap to Quantum Security Would Send Bitcoin Price Higher 'Very Quickly'
Bitcoin developer Charles Edwards has emphasized the need for a clear roadmap to address the risk of quantum computing attacks on the network. According to Edwards, who is the founder of Capriole Investments, a hedge fund focused on Bitcoin and digital assets, a publicly outlined plan would alleviate some of the uncertainty surrounding this issue.
Edwards believes that a roadmap outlining steps to harden the blockchain against quantum threats would send the price of Bitcoin higher 'very quickly.' He estimates that Bitcoin is currently around 40% below its fair value based on energy value, while arguing that quantum risk accounts for roughly a 30% discount. This means, in his opinion, the current price reflects the quantum risk based on available information.
The uncertainty surrounding the quantum threat has had an impact on investor sentiment, and some analysts have linked it to the downfall of Bitcoin's price. The world's largest asset manager, BlackRock, recently pointed to quantum computing as a potential long-term risk in materials for spot Bitcoin ETF investors.
Edwards notes that other chains have already addressed this issue by outlining a clear roadmap to address the quantum threat, and he believes that Bitcoin developers should follow suit. He emphasizes that the current lack of a solution or roadmap is 'somewhat counterintuitively an upside catalyst potential,' because it is currently on the back burner.
Bitcoin's current price is around $65,270 at the time of publication, roughly 49% below its October all-time highs of $126,100. Edwards predicts that a clear roadmap would send Bitcoin's price higher 'double digits probably.' The Ethereum network is due to complete its post-quantum overhaul by 2029, which will likely shine a spotlight on Bitcoin's own preparations for this issue.
