Ehrsam's Venezuelan Oil Bet Could Ripple into Crypto Markets
Coinbase co-founder Fred Ehrsam has made a significant investment in Venezuela's oil sector, signing a production-sharing contract with PDVSA, the country's major oil producer. The Orinoco Belt, where Primavera, Ehrsam's investment vehicle, is seeking control of at least three fields, is home to the world's largest concentration of extra-heavy crude.
Ehrsam has been living in a Caracas hotel for months while dealing with the oil business in Venezuela. His unusual move into the oil industry has raised eyebrows, but it's not entirely unexpected given his background as an entrepreneur and investor. As a member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, Ehrsam is well-equipped to navigate complex investment opportunities.
The potential impact of increased Venezuelan oil production on global markets cannot be overstated. With estimated reserves of 303 billion barrels, Venezuela has the highest amount of oil reserves in the world. However, current production levels are a mere 783,000 barrels per day (bpd), which is expected to increase to 1.12 million bpd by July 2026.
