EigenLayer's Slashing Mechanism Exposes $15-18B in Restaked ETH Loss
On April 17, 2026, EigenLayer activated production slashing on mainnet. The event exposed between $15 billion and $18 billion in restaked ETH to cryptoeconomic loss.
The activation changed the economic landscape for the $19.7 billion restaking ecosystem. Before the upgrade, slashing parameters existed only as theoretical placeholders. After the upgrade, Operators face real penalties if they fail to meet the commitments they agreed to with an Actively Validated Service.
The EIGEN token price fell 86% from highs of $5.65 to lows of $0.75 while Total Value Locked dropped from over $15 billion to roughly $7 billion by late 2025.
