El Reno Bitcoin Mining Site Exposed After Massive Water Leak
A massive water leak in El Reno, Oklahoma has exposed a Bitcoin mining site operated by Athlon Blockchain Technology that was found to be operating unlawfully for years.
The facility, similar to a data center, had been issued a stop work order in 2023 due to code violations and missing permits. Despite this, the property owners continued to construct the facility and began operations without a Certificate of Occupancy.
The leak wasted approximately three million gallons of water, with the city estimating the property owners will be responsible for around $32,000 in damages.
