The city of El Reno, Oklahoma, has acknowledged its failure to follow up on a permit denial for Bitcoin mining company Athlon Blockchain in 2023. The facility was operating without a license when it suffered a massive water leak that released approximately 3.8 million gallons of water, forcing water restrictions and school closures.

The city's interim manager, Ken Brown, admitted the oversight, saying 'We failed.' He explained that officials assumed Athlon would comply with the decision, but instead they took no further action.

The leak was attributed to a faulty fire suppression system at the facility. The company is expected to cover the costs associated with the incident, which included city employee response efforts and water loss.

In response to the incident, El Reno is implementing new safeguards to prevent similar occurrences in the future. This includes developing a system that would alert officials when unusually high water usage or pressure drops occur.
