El Reno Water Crisis Linked to Unpermitted Bitcoin Mining Facility

El Reno, Oklahoma's municipal water tower dropped from approximately 750,000 gallons to roughly 200,000 in late August 2026 due to a massive water leak. The source of the leak was traced back to Athlon Blockchain Technology LLC's private fire-suppression line on their Bitcoin mining property.

The city had issued a Stop Work Order in 2023, citing multiple fire and life safety code violations along with expired building and electrical permits. However, no valid permits were ever issued for an operating data center on the property.

Athlon deployed modular shipping-container units that complicated traditional enforcement of permit frameworks. The leak originated from a private fire hydrant and suppression line, not city infrastructure.

El Reno's Public Schools and Union City schools closed for multiple days, while city and county offices also shut down due to the water shortage. The city issued a 10-day abatement notice and scheduled an administrative hearing for approximately September 14, 2026.
