El Salvador Becomes First Country to Embrace Bitcoin as Official Legal Tender
El Salvador has made history by becoming the first country to adopt Bitcoin as its official legal tender. The move, which was confirmed on Tuesday, sparked both excitement and concerns among investors and residents alike.
According to CoinMarketCap data, Bitcoin's price initially surged to $52,853.76 after the news broke, but later fell to $50,689.41. A campaign on Twitter encouraged people around the world to buy $30 in BTC to celebrate El Salvador's move, which is significant because this is the crypto reward that Salvadorans receive if they download the government's official Chivo wallet.
However, some have expressed concern that any attempt to inflate Bitcoin's value could make it more expensive for Salvadorans who are buying the cryptocurrency for the first time. Daniel Hercules, a taxi driver in El Salvador, told the BBC that only about 10% of his customers have been using Bitcoin as payment, and he is worried about its value falling.
President Nayib Bukele confirmed that the government's official Chivo wallet had to be briefly disconnected due to server capacity issues. The government also announced that it has purchased 200 BTC, taking the total amount of crypto it holds in reserve to 400 BTC, in addition to a $150 million fund to ensure Bitcoin can be converted into U.S. dollars with ease.
