El Salvador Doubles Down on Daily Bitcoin Buys Despite IMF Deal

El Salvador has maintained its daily Bitcoin purchase program since November 17, 2022. The government buys one BTC every day, which accounts for over 1,700 of the country's total holdings. As of early August 2026, El Salvador holds approximately 7,734 BTC in its national reserve, worth around $500 million at current prices.

The daily purchases are overseen by the National Bitcoin Office and have continued despite significant concessions made to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in a $1.4 billion agreement finalized in late 2024. The IMF deal removed Bitcoin's legal tender status in El Salvador, but did not require the country to sell its holdings.

The country first adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in September 2021 and has continued to accumulate it through daily purchases and opportunistic buys during market dips. In November 2025, El Salvador scooped up roughly 1,090 BTC in a single transaction during a price pullback.
