El Salvador Halts Public Bitcoin Accumulation Since June 2025
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says El Salvador has not used public funds to accumulate Bitcoin since June 2025. The country's government has provided documentation showing that any accumulation of BTC since then reflected private donations.
This disclosure comes as part of the IMF staff's deal with Salvadoran authorities on the combined second and third reviews of the country's Extended Fund Facility program. Subject to approval by the IMF Executive Board, this deal would unlock about $140 million for El Salvador.
The government had previously added 8 BTC in May last year, taking its holdings to 6,190.18 BTC. In November, they disclosed a 1,090 BTC purchase worth around $100 million, which marked their largest single-day acquisition at the time and took total holdings to 7,474 BTC.
The IMF says no further Bitcoin accumulation beyond documented donations is expected.
