El Salvador's Bitcoin Adoption Hits Roadblock Amid Price Volatility
El Salvador's Bitcoin adoption has stalled due to several factors. According to Jon Atack, a Bitcoin Core developer living in El Zonte, or 'Bitcoin Beach', Bitcoin payments have become less common among businesses and consumers.
Atack attempted to pay for his meal with Bitcoin at a restaurant but found that card payments were significantly more prevalent than cryptocurrency transactions. The employees noted that this was the only Bitcoin transaction they had made all month.
Experts attribute the decline in Bitcoin's use as a payment method to the 'HODL' approach, where investors view Bitcoin as a long-term store of value rather than a daily expense option. Additionally, the high volatility in Bitcoin's price has led consumers and businesses to be reluctant to use it for payments.
El Salvador became the first country to recognize Bitcoin as an official currency in 2021 but later changed regulations after loaning from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The new rules make accepting Bitcoin payments voluntary rather than mandatory, which could further reduce its usage.
