El Salvador's Bitcoin Payments Plummet at Bitcoin Beach
Bitcoin payments in El Salvador have plummeted to an all-time low at Bitcoin Beach (El Zonte), according to Jon Atack, a Bitcoin Core contributor who has been following the trend. The once-thriving BTC payment volumes in the surf town have tanked, with merchants now turning to card payments from tourists and residents for commercial transactions.
Atack revealed that he made a BTC payment at a restaurant during his visit in January and was told by an employee that it was the first Bitcoin payment since the start of the month. The worker noted that she had seen the boom of BTC payments in El Zonte but had forgotten how to use her Bitcoin app, highlighting the decline in usage over the years.
The reasons behind the falling Bitcoin payment volumes are attributed to a combination of factors, including a rising HODL mentality among locals looking to profit from Bitcoin's price surge and the government's decision to make Bitcoin acceptance voluntary after an IMF loan deal. The deal required El Salvador to pause public-sector Bitcoin accumulation and remove its legal tender status.
El Salvador continues to report buying approximately 1 BTC per day, with a total of 7,751 BTC held in its treasury. Analysts have branded the new purchases as consolidation from different government wallets.
