El Salvador's Bitcoin Stash Grows Through Private Donations, Not Public Funds
El Salvador's Bitcoin stash has continued to grow since its loan review in June 2025, but not through public funds as some had speculated. According to documents provided by Salvadoran authorities and confirmed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), all of the added Bitcoins came from private donations.
The IMF clarified that no public money was used to purchase Bitcoin after the loan review, contradicting earlier concerns that El Salvador might be breaking the terms of its deal with the fund. The country's Bitcoin balance now stands at 7,764 BTC, worth approximately $628 million based on current prices.
In November 2025, El Salvador announced it had acquired 1,090 Bitcoins worth $100 million, raising questions about compliance with its IMF agreement. However, documents show that these additions were indeed private donations and not government purchases.
