ENS Proposes Migration to L2 Registry Model to Cut Domain Costs

Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is exploring ways to reduce costs associated with domain registration and renewal through an L2 registry migration. The proposal aims to move more of this activity from Ethereum mainnet to a Layer-2 model, which could lower gas fees for users.

ENS is one of the most recognizable non-financial protocols on Ethereum, providing readable names for wallets instead of long addresses. However, high Ethereum mainnet fees can make everyday domain actions expensive and limit how broadly ENS can be used.

The L2 registry model could help by moving routine activity onto cheaper infrastructure while preserving the trust assumptions that made ENS valuable in the first place.
