ERC-8391 Aims to Standardize Market State Data for Tokenized Stocks
A proposed Ethereum token standard aims to improve how smart contracts handle market state information for tokenized stocks and other real-world assets. ERC-8391, developed by former Ethereum core developer Eric Connor, seeks to address a critical gap in current tokenization frameworks.
When trading on blockchain networks like Ethereum, tokenized stocks are available 24/7, whereas traditional exchanges operate only about 32.5 hours per week. This creates a challenge for smart contracts that rely on price feeds, as they cannot easily distinguish between a closed market and one with halted trading or significant corporate events.
The proposed standard introduces an asset-state interface that separates market data from market context. Smart contracts can access a structured layer of information describing the operational status of the asset, including flags for trading halts, validity periods for valuation data, and conditions under which redemption can occur.
