ERCOT Batch Zero: Bitcoin Miners' New Grid Access Arms Race
The Bitcoin mining industry has shifted its focus from competing in hashrate and machine orders to securing grid access. ERCOT Batch Zero, a new scoreboard, is tracking companies' progress in obtaining electricity connections for their data centers.
In the past week, several companies announced that they had received conditional Base Load status for their projects in Texas. This status indicates that the projects have sufficient prior study work and development commitments to be included in ERCOT's Batch Zero process.
However, not all companies disclosed the exact amount of capacity classified as Base Load versus Studied Load. For example, Galaxy announced that 5 projects received conditional classifications covering approximately 4.2 GW, but only 1.63 GW at Helios I and II was classified as Base Load, while another 2.6 GW across Caspian, Selene, and Helios III was classified as Studied Load.
The distinction between Base Load and Studied Load is crucial because projects that are classified as Base Load enter the study's starting model without undergoing a new Batch Zero capacity allocation, while those classified as Studied Load qualify for inclusion but still face evaluation and allocation.
