Erebor Bank Cracks Down on Stablecoin Arbitrage
Erebor Bank, founded by Oculus creator Palmer Luckey, has tightened its terms on free stablecoin-to-cash conversions. The change affects trading firms that exploited the fee-free service for arbitrage purposes.
The policy shift targets clients whose conversion patterns resemble systematic arbitrage rather than normal banking activity. This move is in response to firms like Wintermute using Erebor as a free toll road for high-frequency round trips between stablecoins and their dollar pegs.
Erebor Bank initially launched with a promise of free, instant conversions, which was a major draw for crypto-native companies and individuals. The bank accumulated $4 billion in deposits within six months, with a valuation north of $8 billion by mid-2026.
The change does not eliminate the free conversion feature entirely but limits access to accounts exhibiting patterns consistent with arbitrage trading. Regular customers can still convert stablecoins to cash without fees, while trading firms will need to pay for the privilege or take their business elsewhere.
