ESMA Sounds Alarm on Growing Crypto-Finance Interlinks
The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has issued a warning about the growing links between cryptocurrency markets and traditional finance. In its latest risk monitoring report, ESMA calls for close monitoring of this interconnection, citing tokenized stocks, DeFi, and predictive markets as key areas of concern.
Tokenized stocks are one example of how crypto is converging with traditional finance. While their adoption remains limited compared to global stock markets, they're bringing new infrastructures, investors, and intermediaries into the circuit. ESMA has expressed reservations about tokenized stocks, particularly when tokens don't grant the same rights as traditional stocks.
DeFi exploits are another issue on ESMA's radar. The regulator notes that recent incidents have raised concerns about spillover effects and interconnection risks. When DeFi protocols manipulate assets from traditional finance, a compromised smart contract can affect assets outside the blockchain, posing a risk to broader financial markets.
