Esper Warns Senate: Passing CLARITY Act Crucial for National Security

Share

Mark Esper, former U.S. Secretary of Defense, is urging the Senate to pass the CLARITY Act, which would extend Patriot Act provisions to digital assets and modernize the identification and special measures apparatus against foreign institutions.

The bill aims to stop rogue actors such as North Korea and criminal organizations from exploiting offshore loopholes to evade American financial controls.

Esper warned that failing to pass CLARITY would allow China to set digital payment rules, eroding the U.S. dollar's dominance in the process.

The CLARITY Act would expand Section 311 of the USA Patriot Act to include digital assets, allowing for more effective monitoring and regulation of cryptocurrency transactions.

Esper emphasized that the bill is not just a financial services issue but also a national security matter, as it would help preserve American dominance in the digital payments space.
