Estonian Crypto Exchange Zondacrypto Exposed as Likely Fraud

Zondacrypto, once one of Central and Eastern Europe's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, has been exposed as a likely fraud in a recent New York Times investigation.

The exchange claimed to have over 1.3 million clients but its office above a kitchenware shop in Tallinn was unattended, with the lobby mailbox filled for months. The founder, Sylwester Suszek, went missing in 2022 after Polish regulators began asking questions in 2018.

Control of the exchange passed to Przemysław Kral, who ran lavish marketing programs and made claims about a 4,500 Bitcoin reserve worth over $330 million. However, the wallet containing these assets had been dormant for nearly a decade.

The Estonian authority revoked Zondacrypto's license in late June, and prosecutors in Katowice opened an investigation into its creation and operation.
